Supreme Beings of Leisure return with their third album, 11i a darkly cinematic collection of enchanting, hypnotizing songs. Sultry rhythms and understated electronica complement the sophisticated songcraft behind their signature sound.

The album is a song cycle about daily life that begins with the sumptuous prelude of The Light and seamlessly evolves into the concluding drifting-into-dreams track, Lay Me Down. In between are standouts including the wistful and melodic This World, Mirror and Angelhead (feat. Lili Haydn).

Her First Album for Almost 10 Years which Celebrates her 70th Year and Combines New Recordings, New Vocals and Remixes by Some of Today's Most Contemporary Producers


***** - Welsh/Nigerian songstress, Dame Shirley Bassey, returns with an album of classics with a contemporary twist. Produced by a slew of cutting edge producers and remixers like Bugz in the attic, and North by northwest, the project was driven by the Dame herself.

Best known by some for the Bond theme songs she sang; "Diamonds are forever", "Goldfinger". And "Moonraker", the 13 songs on this collection are heavily influenced by that. The album has already given Dame Shirley Bassey her first UK top 10 album in some decades and deservedly so.

"The living tree" is arguably the best Bond record that never was, with it's Trip Hop feel; a brooding sound, sweeping dramatic strings and explosive vocal delivery (her voice is as booming as ever - she doesn't do things by halves) from the seventy year old Dame. Similar is the self assertive "This is my life".

Lionel Richie's "Hello" is given a haunting, atmospheric treatment. Nicole's dad would be proud of the result. The lightly horn sprinkled "Can I touch you there" (the Michael Bolton song) is similarly transformed (lovely percussion and nice male harmonies).

"I who have nothing" is given a slight dub feel, while "I will survive" is transformed by epic sounding strings and skittery percussion. "What now my love" has a slight salsa feel. "You only live twice" (originally done by Nancy Sinatra) is covered superbly here, downplaying the Bond feel, and giving it a light Cuban feel.

"Where is the love" is given the disco treatment (superb sax outro, by the way), similar to her "Moonraker" hit, and her old hit "Big spender" starts off startingly like Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" in its new incarnation.

The title track is a rousing reworking of Pink's "Get the party started" with dramatic strings, and crisp enunciation from the Dame.

It is amazing to see a veteran like Dame Shirley Bassey still sounding cutting edge and not resting on her laurels. If you like your music bland and safe, this might not be for you.

Her other album of remixes, "Diamonds are forever: the remix album" is also worth checking out. "Get the party started" is a wonderful aural experience!! - by NSE ETTE

Ghost is not real

Helsinki-based lo-fi band, originally a one man show orchestrated by Makro Nyberg with the intention of producing cinematic music inspired by the "power of films and hypnotic quality of photography." Even though the band has changed, now a four-sometimes-five member band with one hell of a chic lead songstress, the original intentions are still there on the group's latest album Ghost Is Not Real, a collection of songs that, as the above quote suggests, makes for perfect company as we waltz through time and space into the dead of winter. Radiohead

In Rainbow

On the deliriously satisfying In Rainbows, Radiohead returns to a more straight-ahead (though subdued) rock sound. Much hubbub has been made about this record's innovative release. Radiohead allowed fans to pay what they wished to download fairly low-resolution tracks from the band's own website. Like so many innovations, it already seems funny both that it was such big news and that someone else of similar stature hadn't done it sooner. Some pundits were appalled that it took awhile to download the tracks if you tried to do it at the same time as thousands of other people, while others decried that the group was trying to kill the music industry (or save it). Little of the press seemed to focus on the record itself, which actually made sense because it was so entertaining and inviting, the most low-key album Radiohead has made to date. There's even a very straight-forward, simple, silly little love song, "House of Cards." It might be a bit lethargic, but the simple instrumentation of electric guitars, bass, and drums is lovely as heck. A handful of these tunes enchanted fans for years before finally being committed to computer "tape." This is particularly fitting as In Rainbows is the group's most "band"-sounding album since OK Computer. This is not a record that hits you over the head with how far this group is pushing the envelope; it's simply a phenomenal, well-crafted, and exciting album. Aos 40 do segundo tempo, chegou um dos grandes discos do ano. Onde Brilhem os Olhos Seus, CD em que
Fernanda Takai, a cantora do Pato Fu, aborda com graça e criatividade o repertório de Nara Leão.
Grande idéia de Nelson Motta, que sacou que Takai é uma espécie de Nara do pop nacional.
Não tanto pela voz miúda, mas pela inteligência das interpretações. Nara sempre foi intérprete antenada.
e viva fosse, certamente aprovaria as releituras de Takai para Debaixo dos Caracóis de seus Cabelos e o
samba Diz que Fui por Aí, que virou canção no disco. Mas o mérito não é somente de Nelson e da cantora.
John Ulhoa produziu o álbum. E, embora a rigor se trate do primeiro disco solo de Takai, fica a (ótima) impressão de que é um disco do Pato Fu com o repertório de Nara. Recomendo entusiasticamente.
