Onde Brilhem Os Olhos Seus
Fernanda Takai

December, 18, 2007

Diz que fui por ai
Lindoneia
Com Açúcar, com afeto

Debaixo dos Caracóis dos seus cabelos
Insensatez

Seja o meu Céu
Estrada do Sol
Trevo de quatro Folhas
Descansa Coração
Canta, Maria
Ta-hi

Recomendo entusiasticamente.

Days of Twang

May 8, 2007

When oh when will America wake up to this band? Perhaps, years from now after they have peaked (each release makes you believe they have and then POW! another masterpiece) and America experiences another "I've always been into Floyd, it's just suddenly become popular to like them". They are of course a DJ's band / collective and their style is a plural. From Drum and bass to exquisite Funk, from turntables sampling to trombone solos. This newest release certainly has Twang, a tangible increase in the use of guitars, just when you thought only Air could use them in Electronica. This is the future of Popular Music, large bands roaming the land, people dancing again to Jazz for this is Jazz in a way too. There are real songs here, not electronic jams where every agrees that where the key changes is called the break. The Future is good for modern music, there will be venues eventually where one will be able to go dance with your love. I see it, it's there just over the horizon. - DJ4cast (Roger Hannagan)

The Trentemoller Chronicles

The Trentemoller Chronicles

October 9, 2007

This is Anders Trentemøller's second full-length release, after his astounding and critically-acclaimed debut, The Last Resort on Pokerflat. This new double album is not a new studio album but, as the title indicates, an overview of Trentemøller's impressive body of work. The Trentemøller Chronicles includes Anders' personal selection of his best songs and remixes, which have only been available on vinyl or on compilations, as well as some new and exclusive songs. But the fantastic Trentemøller mix on CD1 and the fine selection of remixes on CD2 make this release a great double album in its own right for extraordinary listening pleasure. The Last Resort took the hearts of music lovers worldwide by storm. At that moment in time the Danish producer had built his outstanding reputation on not only his huge dancefloor hits, but also the remix work he'd done for other artists. Trentemøller's work is an organic combination of hand-played instruments and electronic sounds. Layer after layer of instruments fall perfectly into place and contrasting large and vast echoes and sharp, in-your-face sound bites mix with a dangerous but successful incompatibility. This Chronicle presents new songs and remixes and the best tracks and remixes that have only been available on 12", all hand-selected by the artist himself. Artists in the mix also include: Klovn, Ane Trolle, Richard Davis, Mathias Schaffhäuser, The Blacksmoke Organisation, The Knife, Filur, Jokke Ilsøe, Robyn, Sharon Phillips, Tomboy, Moby and Djuma Soundsystem.

Underworld

Oblivion with bells

October 16, 2007

After a five-year hiatus, Underworld return with an album that draws from across their past. With a mix of aggression and sunshine, they calculate syncopated, ricocheted beats against cleanly delineated textures and circumscribed melodies that have the cool of the 1980s New Romantic movement from which they originally sprang as Freur. Kraftwerk is in the DNA of their sound, but they've moved well past that, incorporating elements of hip-hop and industrial music into the mix. I wonder if Underworld's later mix of poetic spoken-word songs affected Brian Eno's recent work with poetry and music, because the influence seems to have boomeranged back in the vocal cadences of tracks such as "Ring Road." Like some of Eno's work, Karl Hyde's frequently treated, monotone talk-singing vocals could have been time-shifted from a beat-poetry reading of the early '60s. The only thing missing is the bongos. When his voice is processed, it merges as part of the sound field, but when his voice is relatively unaltered, as on "Good Morning Cockerel," it just becomes tedious. The best tracks on Oblivion with Bells are also the most ambitious. "Crocodile" has some lovely, almost Gregorian harmonies, while "Beautiful Burnout" is an epic journey with broad synthesizer chords sweeping by like headlights before segueing into a joyfully ritualistic electro-percussion tribal workout. But after that pair of opening tracks, you have to wait until the very last piece, a long, trancey bit of psychedelic drift called "The Best Mamgu Ever," to hear something more than unformed melodies and unstrung ideas. Underworld can reach higher ground. --John Diliberto

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe - Remixed

February 15, 2005

I love this CD because the music is so dynamic and rich and is an excellent compliment to Marilyn's voice. A couple of tracks could have been done more imaginatively, but most of them are a lot of fun. I hope that this inspires other DJs to take a crack at remixing her songs as I think this CD shows that there is potential for some really incredible stuff to be done. Her voice doesn't sound dated at all and she could have been recorded yesterday.

Billie Holliday - remixed / reimagined

REMIXED/REIMAGINED

March 27, 2007

Hot on the heels of Nina Simone's like-minded project, this 14-track disk takes Billie Holiday's masterful and mourning vocals of 1935 to 1958 to the 21st-century digital dance floor, courtesy of some resourceful remixers and DJs from Swingsett & Takuya and Nickodemus & Zeb to Organica and Poppyseed. You have to give these aural alchemists credit for their daring, but some tracks work better than others. The best include "Spreadin’ Rhythm Around," featuring Digable Planet's Ladybug Mecca, the echoplexed embers of GXR's "Long Gone Blues," DJ Logic's string-centric "Glad to be Unhappy," and Daniel Y's infectious, Soul to Soul/Loose Ends grooved "Billie's Blues." With augmentation provided by live guitarists, keyboardists, and percussionists, these scientists of sound don't desecrate the gardenia-wearing goddess's eternal artistry; rather, they globally reposition it for this era's electronica-fueled iPod generation, from the downbeat to the download. --Eugene Holley

Carla Bruni

Quelqu´un m´a dit

April 8, 2003

Originally best-known as an Italian-born model who had affairs with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, Bruni has matured into a remarkably talented and self-possessed singer-composer-guitarist. Her debut album, sung mostly in French, could best be described as neo-chanson. Bruni's whispery, wobbly, husky voice, wryly deadpan delivery and introspective lyrics recall Francoise Hardy, Barbara, Jane Birkin and Nico. But unlike her forebears, who so often posed as waif-like child-women and doormat-like victims of passion, Bruni remains firmly on top. Her lyrics can and do celebrate true love but she also praises the delights of female sexual empowerment in no uncertain terms, as on J'en Connais ("I've Known A Few"). Musically, the tunes range from folk Français to echoes of le jazz hot to bluesy torch numbers. The spare, mostly acoustic instrumentation is unfussy and atmospheric, while the I-couldn't-care-less ambience is occasionally punctuated by chimes, insouciant whistling or an impudent, sly giggle. --Christina Roden

Pink Martini

Hey Eugene

May 15, 2007

After a seven-year gap between their first and second albums, Pink Martini have brought forth their third long-player just over two and a half years later. Based in Portland, Oregon, this dazzling 12-piece ensemble are led by pianist Thomas Lauderdale and fronted by vocalist China Forbes. Their rich musical journeys carry listeners everywhere from a ballroom in Havana to a cabaret in Paris. This set even includes a number in Japanese and another in Arabic. With their strings, horns, and sultry rhythms, Pink Martini find the common denominators in these musics from around the globe. Hey Eugene! is perfectly bookended with a pair of decidedly American numbers: their original "Everywhere" evokes musicals from Hollywood's golden era, while "Tea for Two" finds guest duet partner Jimmy Scott adding his emotionally riveting singing. While Lauderdale and his cohorts draw from past times and styles, they never come off as museum curators; rather, they celebrate the vibrancy that makes music timeless. --David Greenberger

Feist

The reminder

May 1, 2007
Feist is the solo project of Canada's Leslie Feist, a prolific artist who has also played in one capacity or another with Broken Social Scene, Kings of Convenience and half a dozen other bands. The Reminder, her third release, comes from the same well of quiet, appealing songwriting, and delicate vocalizations that made 2004's Let It Die such a sweet treat. This one is a bit more hushed and ballad heavy, closer to Cat Power than Peaches (with whom Feist has also worked with in the past) but maintains an indie-minded blend of confessional pop, jazzy folk, and lo-fi torch songs. The comparatively upbeat single "My Moon My Man" splits her voice off into unexpected harmonies, just dissonant enough to stick in your head. It's hard to predict where her melodies are going to end up; "Brandy Alexander" starts with a simple snap-pulse, and gradually unfolds into a cathartic chorus of sweeping vocal overlays. Throughout, the record profits from a simple, unfussy aesthetic that keeps the production minimal and the emphasis squarely on Feist's cracking, wistful vibrato. Everything sounds deliberate, but not obsessed over, like an e-mailed wedding invitation. It's a low-pressure vibe, welcoming and content to linger. And linger you will. --Matthew Cooke

Vive la Fête

Republique Populaire

2002

Duet of sexy French lyrics and eighties-style wave and electropop. Vive la Fête is one of the projects of dEUS-bass-player Danny Mommens (others are Sexmachines - rock'n roll - Jesus Christ - heavy rock), who teams up in the band with his girlfriend Els Pynoo. Usually also Piet Jorens (Arno, Pieter-Jan De Smet, Charles et les Lulus ...) and Aldo Struyf (Nemo) are on the stage with them. The combination of Danny's love for eighties wave music and the Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin-fixation of Els blend together in Vive La Fête.

Tricky

Maxinquaye

April 18, 1995

Less experimentally brash than his more recent release, Tricky's debut CD Maxinquaye is actually a better introduction to the British hip-hopper turned international trip-hopper than his later work. The dozen smoldering, moonlit tracks are less concerned with loopy aural exaggeration than they are with showcasing Tricky's slow-mo rap and singer Martine's sexy soprano. With the exception of the stellar "Pumpkin," (featuring vox from Alison Goldfrapp), the duo mix a colorful palate of rhythmic vocals, throbbing backbeats and gravelly electronic textures. Toss in large doses of sexual innuendo and Maxinquaye becomes a libidinous foray into languor and lust. --Nick Heil

Tricky

Pre-Millennium Tension

November 19, 1996

Pre-Millennium Tension picks up where the first album Maxinquaye left off, but this CD fulfills the promise of Tricky's unbounded spontaneity and fondness for sonic digression. Abandoning the accessible pop of Maxinquaye, Pre-Millennium Tension serves up a beguiling array of sound effects, electro distortion and fragmented lyrics that amount to a rich--if bizarre-musical montage. As suggested by its title, this disc zeros in on a kind of end-of-the-millennium disruption of classifiable sound. With its cross-pollination of hip-hop, cabaret balladry, background textures, and disjointed arrangements, Pre-Millennium Tension takes a peek at the future of pop music and declares it will be nothing like we expect. --Nick Heil

red hot and blue

tribute to Cole Porter
There's a long tradition of artists banding together for a noble cause, but--needless to say--good intentions are no guarantee of good art. Fortunately, the twain do meet and the project even succeeds with creative flair in this compilation. It kicked off the Red Hot AIDS Benefit series back in 1990 and in fact launched its own sort of minigenre, including theme albums devoted to George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. In fact, this eclectic mix of Cole Porter covers interpreted by a wide swath of contemporary artists unfurls a pretty ambitious agenda in addition to its message of AIDS awareness and compassion. Here, the legacy of this ultra-sophisticated, closeted master of the popular song from the era of the "lost generation" is presented as a source of rejuvenating inspiration. Porter's craft seems validated by the very flexibility of the original songs as they get retrofitted to encompass styles ranging from U2 and Tom Waits to Jungle Brothers. There's an occasional miscalculation (Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop's didactic "updating" of Porter's bon vivant wit doesn't compare well with the original), but moments of stunning fusion abound (Sinéad O'Connor and Annie Lenox contribute especially memorable gems). Instead of getting lost in translation, Red Hot + Blue adds a whole new dimension to the art of swellegance. --Thomas May

Bryan Ferry

As time goes by

october 19, 1999

No stranger to covers, Bryan Ferry has often opted for classics from other times and places. As Time Goes By focuses on music largely from the 1930s and '40s and conjures that era's aura of fine cigars, sateen gowns, and gentlemanly romance. The opening title track summons images of Bogie and Ingrid, and is one of the finest moments in the collection. The swanky versions of Nina Simone's signature "Love Me or Leave Me" and "I'm in the Mood for Love" (which has a faint Martin Denny overtone) are perfectly suited to Ferry's low-key vocals (he's no real crooner, let's face it). His talented band swings with fervor, especially on the upbeat tunes "The Way You Look Tonight," "Lover Come Back to Me," and "Just One of Those Things." There are a number of intimate, romantic moments, but the highlight is Ferry's take on "Falling in Love Again," first made famous way back when with devastating sadness by Marlene Dietrich.. Ferry's version is almost as moving. --Lorry Fleming

Air

Moon Safari

January 27, 1998

French duo Air's debut album is a superlatively happy collection of experimental disco-mood sound nestled between ambient soundscape and breathy pop. It's jazzy and melodic, and mostly laid-back, but not excessively so. There are a few shake-it, shake-it numbers, too, like the absurdly daft hit "Sexy Boy." It's snap your fingers and hang out (while reading) music or dance around sexy-slow with your mate music. It's also the perfect music to do your ironing or some other chore to; it's hypnotizing wallpaper music. It slips in and out of your consciousness, forcing you to move around with a relaxed smile before you even realize it. Oh, and contrary to sampler fashion, Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel played the instruments themselves. Bravo. --Mike McGonigal

llorca

new comer

September 24, 2002

The feeling of carefree and unconsciously sensual spirit prevails throughout Llorca's debut album, New Comer - particularly the songs that are in collaboration with Lady Bird ("True to Me" and "My Precious Thing.") "My Precious Thing," with its easy-flowing funk, helped Llorca develop a tremendous buzz in Europe. Also present in the mix are huge tides of jazz-funk (check the upright bass and piano licks of "Lalo Caught Me Dancin'") as well as strains of the golden era of Detroit techno and Chicago house (as on the brilliant "I Cry" with R&B singer Mandel Turner).
