Zuco 103

Tales of high fever

A more mature and substantial record than last year's still delightful Outro Lado, Tales of High Fever expands Zuco 103's blend of tropical rhythms and airy electronics, adding a light but insistently funky undertow. Featuring Brazilian vocalist Lilian Vieira, German keyboardist-programmer Stefan Schmid, and Dutch drummer-programmer Stefan Kruger, this global lineup knows how to explore an edgy and intoxicating groove. The lead-off track, "Treasure," starts things with a cool breeze of tropical funk, Vieira's playful vocals wafting over a popping electronic bass. "Peregrino" sounds like a South American version of funk-era Talking Heads with James Brown's horn section sitting in. "Tao Lonely" is dry as a bone drum and bass electro-pop; "Brazil 2000" is a fabulously dance-floor-ready 21st century bossa nova. But it's the expansive "Saci" and the tight, complex funk of "Curso de Reclamacao" that really show Zuco 103 stretching in new ways that go beyond the dance floor into more sublime territory - Carl Hanni

Zuco 103

Whaa!

The multi-national Crammed Discs-Ziriguiboom-Six Degrees triumvirate is the force behind several tropical world salads, wherein classic and cutting-edge styles are shredded, tossed, re-imagined and transformed. Zuco 103 have released two previous exercises in frothy, mind-bending musical shape shifting. The Dutch-based trio consists of Lilian Vieira, a Brazilian-born chanteuse and co-composers Stefan Schmid (drums) and Stefan Kruger (aka Stuv, on keyboards), plus a tight back-up band that includes a sultry saxophone and a shimmering West African kora. The group's sonic language applies trip-hop, light jazz, electronica, subtle drum 'n' bass and other urban sounds to rich gleanings from the lead singer's ancestral samba, afoxé, bossa nova and forró, along with grooves from the Caribbean, Africa, and the Middle-East. Vieira swerves between sophisticated, hallucinatory evocations of Billie Holiday and Elis Regina (the Judy Garland of Brazil), torrid belting and offhand, conversational raps with all the risqué flair of a born scene-stealer. The mix is further enhanced by the presence of two legendary figures--Roberto Menescal, an arranger-singer whose career began in Rio during the sixties--and the brilliant, wildly idiosyncratic Jamaican producer, songwriter and vocalist, Lee "Scratch" Perry. --Christina Roden

Zuco 103

O outro lado

Along with Suba and a host of other acts on the Brasil 2mil compilation, Zuco 103 are one of the contemporary Brazilian acts that Six Degrees Records have brought to the world stage via their Travel series. Zuco 103 blend jazzy electronic pop, trip-hop, and lightweight drum & bass with the joyful sounds of Brazilian samba, bossa nova, and tropicalia. Although vocalist Lillian Vieira is Brazilian, her two bandmates are Dutch and German, lending a distinct blend of European and South American musical styles to the music. The result is a refreshingly light, airy sound that can swing from groovy, chirpy electropop ("Brazilectro") that sounds like a South American Stereolab to campy modern exotica ("No Bar do Samba") and funky hip-hop lite ("Auga Mineral") with a few stops at the drum & bass shop in between. Short on depth but long on pep and snappy grooves, Outro Lado is perfect listening for an extended cocktail hour or beach party. There's even an inviting green libation on the CD cover. --Carl Hanni

Supreme Beings of Leisure

Divine Operating System

Heavy with lounge atmosphere, but still only subtle tweaks away from dance floor nirvana, Supreme Beings of Leisure's sophomore effort has it both ways, laying down smart rhythms in a record that grooves slow and steady like a spy on a stakeout. Less self-consciously multicultural, Divine Operating System is more sure-footed than their self-titled debut, which too often sounded like Morcheeba lite. SBOL's members are a diverse group, with members hailing from Japan, Iceland, Puerto Rico, Iran, and elsewhere, but their debut was so smooth and so familiar, it didn't sound as authentic as it should have. Divine has a not entirely original feel to it as well, given the deluge of Latin and lounge-flavored dance records that have come along since downtempo took off in the late '90s. Still, while not terribly innovative, tracks like "Divine" and "Touch Me" have a fitting R&B aesthetic and a genuine thump. The Eastern-inspired touches that made their debut such a smooth collection surface occasionally, giving slower tracks like "Rock and a Hard Place" a higher bliss quotient. But another record's worth of practice has yielded more authoritative songs, and while it doesn't have a "Strangelove Addiction" on it, the agreeably narcotic effect of the music here withstands repeated listening quite nicely. --Matthew Cooke

Supreme Beings of Leisure

It's reported that Supreme Beings of Leisure emerged when a rap group called Oversoul 7 added a singer named Geri Soriano-Lightwood. Yet the band's laid-back dance grooves sound all of a piece, as if they'd played together for years. There's no messy merging of disparate styles, no rude sound shifts that occur when young bands search for their sound. Instead, this is a professionally buffed production. Though the three instrumental members all share programming duties and the music is certainly heightened by a liberal use of special space-age effects, the music is far more rooted in traditional soul-ballad and pop-rock writing than apparent on first listen. Tracks such as "Golddigger" and "Strangelove Addiction" borrow their hooks from the pop-rock dictionary, no matter how futuristic the desires. It might be another case of style over substance. Or maybe the band needs to transcend their professionalism and really get down to some scary stuff. --Rob O'Connor

St Germain

Boulevard

St. Germain (the brainchild of French producer Ludovic Navarre) has become a respected benchmark on the international music scene. Predating other French talents such as Daft Punk, Air and Dimitri From Paris, St. Germain’s influence is clearly audible in those artists’ work as well. PIAS America continue to unearth the classic gems of electronic music with the timely issue of St. Germain’s "Boulevard, new version the complete series". Never before released in the United States, Boulevard finds smoldering jazz vibes nestled amidst lush dance rhythms in an un-self-consciously eclectic album with tremendous crossover potential.

St Germain

From Detroit to St Germain

In 1998 after three years of silence, St. Germain returned with a compilation of all his best pieces that were released by FNAC music and F Communications from 1992 to 1996. This panorama of sound gives us a clear picture of his incredible diversity and the quality of his talent. From Detroit to St. Germain allows us to re-discover his compositions for Dance Division, which have become very scarce as the original vinyl releases are no longer available, and not re-released since FNAC Music closed in 1994. True talent is rare and now finally sees wider availability in the U.S. Together, these albums further reveal an artist to be both acknowledged and cherished! 12 tracks.

Antony and the Johnsons

If you read the reviews of any of Antony's albums and EPs, here or the UK site, you may find that being rendered speechless after listening to his music is mentioned frequently. I consider this not only accurate but also likely to happen to anyone who may listen to this, his debut, album or its follow-up, the Mercury Prize winner "I Am A Bird Now."
It has been a long time since a singer or songwriter -Antony is both- has moved me so deeply with the dramatic range of his voice, the enveloping depth of his melodies or the courage of his words.
Just consider "Cripple And The Starfish" and "Hitler In My Heart," the second and third cuts, that -particularly if listened together- will absolutely floor you with the tender courage of their lyrics and the glorious beauty of Antony's voice.
For those who may not know his work, I may not be able to offer the kind of references that can serve them well. In term of genre, you can't call it Pop or Alternative, for instance, and expect to have a reliable idea of what you'll hear. If I have to put a style label to this music I'd have to coin a new one, "Alterative," because that's exactly what it might do to you: alter you.
Finally, since I haven't mentioned them yet, a word about The Johnsons. Their sound -almost a chamber ensemble, with the addition of drums and bass- is particularly suited for this music and exquisitely performed. "Divine," a beautiful tribute to the star of many John Waters films, "Twilight" and "The Atrocities" are another three great examples of the band's gift for accompanying Antony.
Although, to my taste, I Am A Bird Now of some songs in the recent EPs (I've reviewed them too, in their pages- may be even more mature statements, this album must be given your full attention. This is a solid five-star album and the first powerful document of an amazing new voice.

Yoko Ono

Yes, i´m a witch

At first glance, this looks like it might be yet another one of those records where an older cult artist is paired with a bunch of younger/ supposedly hipper musicians in efforts to add legitimacy to the younguns and street cred to said cult figure. Such is not the case with Ono's version of a collaborative hipster album, Yes, I'm A Witch. Yoko chose all the artists herself, and her choices range from predictable (Cat Power, Antony, Flaming Lips) to not (Le Tigre, Porcupine Tree, Hank Shocklee). The musicians were asked to pick elements of songs from Ono's back catalog and rework them. Most chose her distinctive vocals and created new songs using them (surprisingly, no one chose to work with "Mind Train" off her daring 1971 LP Fly). Unsurprisingly, Peaches chose to rework "Kiss Kiss Kiss," the infamous Double Fantasy song wherein Ono appears to achieve orgasm. Jason Pierce from Spiritualized turns the dance-y 1981 number "Walking on Thin Ice" into a powerful drone/ guitar workout percolating with a drum machine's pulse. The awesomest song is the Flaming Lips' take on Lennon/ Ono's "Cambridge 1969," carving a marvelous krautrock-ish groove that cradles Ono's unique vocal talents and Lennon's feedback and makes it something new, and better. The results overall are surprisingly great, though it's a bit disorienting given the eclectic array of artists. Ono fans, of course, will not likely be bothered by that. --Mike McGonigal

Pink Martini

Sympathique

While the cocktail lounge fad has seen more than a few musicians climb aboard as a career move, the members of Pink Martini are no bandwagon-riding aficionados. Fronted by pianist Thomas Lauderdale, Pink Martini is the real article--a band that approaches the music with unwavering seriousness yet never forgets the fun at the heart of it. Sympathique, the band's debut album reveals an incredibly diverse musical vocabulary on the part of frontman Lauderdale. And what singer China Forbes lacks in range and dynamics, she more than compensates for in attack, approach, and a clear understanding of the material. While most of the songs are upbeat, in the hands of Lauderdale and Forbes, "Qué será será," with its dark atmospherics should be rechristened "Qué será noir." --Wayne Pernu

Pink Martini

Hang on little tomato

Pink Martini should be known as the little orchestra that walks a fine line in its music. The Portland, Oregon, outfit is deeply influenced by Latin music, jazz, cabaret, cinema scores, and a smattering of other styles. But rather than simply aping legendary artists in their prime--and fooling only a few dim bulbs in the process--band shakes things up by writing its own material, or at least creating tasteful new arrangements that fit within the band’s unique post-lounge framework. The band keeps the playful musical vibe on Hang On Little Tomato, but jettisons what kitsch factor it had, choosing to focus wholly on original material or stuff that isn’t recognizable to the average music fan. It’s been a seven-year wait for fans since the band’s fun debut, Sympathique, and while the blush is now off the rose, the band’s creative ambitions and talent are never better displayed than here on their second effort. – Tad Hendrickson

Kruder & Dorfmeister

Dj-Kicks : Kruder & Dorfmeister

Austrians Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister, whose smooth and sexy acid jazz has attracted almost as much attention as their curious resemblance to American folksters Simon and Garfunkel, demonstrate their skills on yet another installment of Studio K7's DJ Kicks series. The mix highlights the best of European trip-hop, acid jazz, and drum and bass, with their own "High Noon" and "Black Baby" mixed with tracks from British trip-hoppers Herbalizer, German technicians Hardfloor, and Viennese weirdo Patrick Pulsinger, among others. Their straightforward mixing is complemented by a heavy dose of studio postproduction but the emphasis here is on track selection rather than technical trickery. Gotan Project

La revancha del tango

Released in Europe in 2001, La Revancha Del Tango’s sexy combination of chillout programming and authentic tango music became a lounge favorite and led to massive sales. Lightning struck twice when it was released two years later in the States--the domestic debut attracted the attention of electronic music hipsters, tango freaks, and world music geeks. And rightfully so. The Gotan trio of Philippe Cohen Solal, Christoph H. Müller, and Eduardo Makaroff write the album's strongest material themselves, but their imaginative incorporation of Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge," Gato Barbieri's theme from the movie Last Tango In Paris and, not surprisingly, Astor Piazzolla's "Vuelvo Al Sur" into the Gotan world shows just how broad and inclusive their tastes really are. Naysayers may complain that this album can be heard in every hip restaurant and clothing boutique from Paris to Los Angeles, but sometimes the cream does rise to the top and gain mass acceptance, as it has here. Also includes a bonus disc of four remixes. --Tad Hendrickson

The debut by this Paris based trio is a relaxed blend of tango dance rhythms and Argentinean instrumentation. The group was brought together by their passion to combine sound with image and to marry electronic and acoustic music. They built on their house, dub, and hip-hop influenced productions by adding two of Argentina's finest tango musicians, the musical result being supremely distinctive, incorporating bandonion (a form of accordion), violin, and vocals. This release includes 2000's most memorable jazz-house hit, "Triptico", which has already sold over 400,000 copies worldwide. The US version features the original ten tracks from the European release, along with a special bonus disc of the "Santa Maria" video plus four audio tracks.

Brooklyn funk essentials

cool and steady and easy

This is one funky CD. Its funky but not too hip-hoppy, not too acid jazzy either. A solid rythm section holds the bottom end while horns and/or vocals literally bounce and float over the top.
Although this album in very New York (and these guys play live here all the time) anyone who likes jazz infused funk will be into this. Its not as light as the James Taylor Quartet and not as poppy or "British" as the Brand New Heavies, although in many ways, this disc is similar to both of them.

The Brooklyn Funk Essentials are more funky and jazzy with some reggae and world beats thrown in. This is outstanding funk with a spiritual, "feel good" influence. Check out tunes like "The Creator Has a Master Plan" and "Take the L Train." You won't be dissappointed.: Peter R. Fischer

The James Taylor Quartet

in the hand of the inevitable

When the James Taylor Quartet are on their game, laying down guitar lines right out of the Melvin Sparks songbook ("3 Mile Island") or pounding out sweat-drenched B3 gems (the title-track), they create amazingly evocative music, as their unforgettable acid-tinged version of Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" proves. But then vocals appear and all that carefully-crafted mood flies right out the window in a breeze of quiet-storm-styled soul. Sometimes you just have to take the great with the mediocre, and that's the case with In the Hand of the Inevitable. --Percy Keegan

Touch and go

"I find you very attractive"

THE most amazing album ever. Maybe my no. 1 album of all time! First heard it at my dad's place years ago. Didn't like at first but wait! Once more and I went mad! This is THE most melodic, alternative, lounge-jazz I-don't-know what album!
Seriously! This album is worth it's weight in PLATINUM!
And I'm no dumb music fan, obsessed with some album...
This is soo groovy and chill-out and yet has A T T I T U D E!
Try it out... (Alecx Arkstone "Simzz")

Suba

São Paulo Confessions

Yugoslavian-born producer Suba moved to São Paulo, Brazil, in the late 1980s, bringing with him experience in jazz, classical music, theater, ballet, and film. São Paulo Confessions brings the 18-million-strong city to musical life with an ambitious and unique fusion of classic Brazilian styles and modern electronics. The result is a magical blend of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, dreamy vocals, and forward-looking techno. --Marc Greilsamer

The Porter Project

"...in the chill, in the still of the night"

I got this album through my emusic subscription, and I think it's a really good Cole Porter re-mix album. Some people may not enjoy it because it is electronic, and the downtempo, nu-jazz, and drum and bass beats may not appeal to them. Think of this album as along the lines of the Verve Remixed series. For jazz fans looking to expand your horizons, this is an essential album. For electronica fans looking to expand your jazz exposure, this is a great intro.

SIMPLE THINGS

Zero 7's ability to conjure beautiful lullabies with all the romance of 1960s French pop (as found on their debut LP, Simple Things) would have made them the toast of soundtrack composers and chill-out connoisseurs the world over. Unfortunately, two Frenchmen beat Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker to the title of "masters of comedown cool," leaving the London duo to be forever called "the British Air." And this is fair; the similarities between Zero 7's lush cinematic soundscapes and those of Air's Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides score are so strong as to sound almost intentional. Nonetheless, their debut is a truly gorgeous album. It has all the tried and tested atmospheric tricks--bleeps and whooshes layered over plodding Fender Rhodes chords, swathes of strings and tender trumpet parps--but it's Binns and Hardaker's languid grooves and the soft melancholy of their melodies that make dream-state instrumentals "Give It Away" and "Polaris" utterly enchanting. The real power of Simple Things, however, is in its songs. As beautiful as the ambient strains are, when laid beneath the seductive vocals of Australian diva Sia on the ethereal "Destiny" or the heart-breaking "Distractions," their potency becomes apparent. --Dan Gennoe

Eagle-Eye Cherry - Desireless

The offspring of jazz-trumpet great Don Cherry and half-brother of both Neneh Cherry and Swedish pop diva Titiyo (who duets with her brother on "Worried Eyes"), Eagle-Eye proves that we are not who we're related to. He was born in Stockholm to Cherry and Swedish mixed-media artist Moki, and one might suppose a member of this clan to be as innovative as the rest of his brood, especially given such an idiosyncratic moniker. But it turns out that that's the only eccentric thing about this musician. Cherry offers up a low-key, melodic diary of tales of his misspent youth in New York. And despite the music's soft-focus part-Cat Stevens, part-Ben Harper leanings, occasionally you realize that Eagle-Eye must have pasted posters of Ozzy Osbourne and Jimi Hendrix on his bedroom wall. "Indecision" (supposedly a rejoinder to Stockholm neo-Nazi "White Noise" bands like Swastika) rides on a searing Richie Blackmore lick. "Save Tonight" is a bittersweet reworking of Peter, Paul and Mary's "Leaving on a Jet Plane" theme. The title song updates his late father's "Desireless," which is revitalized via sparse piano, a haunting trumpet, and Cherry's hypnotic, repetitive vocals. Here it's clear that, even though he is dabbling in the shoals of alt-folk-rock, Eagle-Eye can claim a limb on the family tree anytime he wants. --Jaan Uhelszki

Antony and the Johnsons

I´M A BIRD NOW >>

It’s not often that an album released in January gets called one of the best of the year in near-unison, but the second full length by Antony and the Johnsons is so startlingly beautiful that it simply has to be. Like his friend and compatriot Devendra Banhart, Antony is a super-talented singer-songwriter with a flair for dramatic artsong. But the cherubic Antony is so original he must get mistaken for an alien quite often; he sings like a bluesy opera singer and switches timbre from masculine to feminine in the space of a breath. The only vocal comparison that comes close is Nina Simone. Antony’s honest lyrics deal with deep wounds and troubled desires with matter of fact poetry and subtle humor, as in a short story by JT LeRoy. Aided and abetted by a versatile band that’s often closer to chamber orchestra than rock act, Antony delivers a visionary album with I Am A Bird Now. Oh yeah: Rufus Wainwright, Devendra, Lou Reed and Boy George all appear on here too . ...Mike McGonigal
